University of Exeter Sports Scholarships 2011

Exeter is proud of its high quality reputation that matches its whole hearted commitment to delivering sporting excellence. Sports Scholars play a key role in maintaining these high standards of achievement; they compete successfully in several of the sports teams that form part of the University High Performance Programme. On average, over 50 Scholarships are awarded each year.

Eligibility
Sports Scholarships are available to undergraduate and postgraduate applicants as well as current students. Candidates must be of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement or potential at national level. They are only offered to students who have gained an offer of a place or normal admission to a course on their academic qualifications. However, it is not necessary to wait for an offer of a place before submitting your registration of interest. No special reduction in entry criteria is offered as part of the scholarship, nor does the offer of a scholarship carry with it an offer of a place.

Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and can be renewable for up to a further two years, subject to satisfactory sporting performance, academic progress and general conduct. The scholar will be assessed at the end of each year and they will have to apply for re-nomination for an award. There is no support offered through the Sports Scholarship Scheme to help finance course, tuition or international fees.

The University will make every effort to accommodate your training and performance needs however, no dispensation is offered from the normal course requirements in terms of assessment, progression or final degree classification.

In return for an award, every scholar must be a student at the University of Exeter and compete for the University in BUCS events.

To receive an award you can study at either the Exeter or Cornwall campuses. However, if the main training sessions for your sport take place at Exeter please note that you may have to travel up to train and compete accordingly. If you are applying to study in Cornwall and would like to apply for a Sports Scholarship please contact Hanna Royle, Sports Co-ordinator, directly for more information rather than completing the online application form visit www.fxu.org.uk or email Hanna.Royle[at]falmouth.ac.uk

Awards
Sports Scholarships will be tailored to the needs of the individual but will include a cash sum for sporting expenses/discounted accommodation costs from £500 up to a maximum of £1,000 and for exceptional athletes, this can rise to £2,000. A full package of support services equating to a cash equivalent of £500 is also provided.

In the main, the Sports Scholarship Scheme is funded centrally by the University High Performance Programme. However, several partners and local and national sponsors also show great generosity by financing several individual scholarships and bursaries.

There are also sports-specific bursaries available:

Golf
Exeter is one of only 12 institutions in the UK to be awarded an educational development grant from the Royal & Ancient to help Exeter administer a performance programme for elite student golfers. Men wishing to apply should have a handicap of scratch or better and women 4 or better. Please see the Golf Bursary pages for full details.

Men’s Rugby
Opportunities exist for undergraduates and postgraduates to apply to the University’s Rugby Bursary Programme run in partnership with Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and kindly supported by the South West Communications Group. Please see the Rugby Bursary pages for full details.

TASS
The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme or TASS as it is better known, is a Government funded programme that represents a unique partnership between sport and higher and further education. Please see the TASS page for full details.

Who can apply for sports scholarships?
Performers from any sport recognised by the AU will be considered, but emphasis is placed on the following High Performance Focus Sports:

* Badminton
* Cricket
* Golf
* Hockey
* Lacrosse
* Netball
* Rowing
* Rugby
* Sailing
* Tennis

However, outstanding performers from any sport will be considered. All of the sports mentioned above have nationally recognised reputations for competition and excellence at Exeter, along with first-class sports-specific training facilities.

How do you apply?
The submission of application forms needs to be undertaken by the 31st March. Apply online using our Online Application Form.
Late applications may be considered after consultation with the Assistant Director of Sport, in order to avoid disappointing any potential sports stars. Late applicants are advised to contact the Assistant Director as soon as possible.

The Sports Scholarship Panel will then assess all applications and invite short listed athletes to formally apply for the second stage of the scheme’s application process at the end of May 2011. This will require a more detailed submission accompanied by 2 sports specific references. The panel will then meet again to decide upon recommendations for awards.

In most circumstances short-listed applicants will receive an invitation in mid July to attend a sports specific screening at the University during pre-season training in September 2011. Following this, a final decision on awards will be made at the beginning of October.

In certain circumstances the offer of an award can be made to applicants by mid-July but this is at the sole discretion of the panel members. If successful with your application, you will be assigned a level of award and notified on what you will need to do next.

* Netherlands Fellowship Programme 2011 for International Master Students

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are fellowship programmes designed to promote capacity building within organizations in 60 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

NFP fellowships can be obtained for a selected number of master’s degree programmes. The Dutch higher education institutions offer many international master’s degree programmes, covering almost
every field of study.

Candidates can receive a postgraduate education and earn one of the following Dutch degrees: Master of Arts, Master of Science or a Professional Master’s degree. A Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree is an academic degree, usually awarded by traditional (research-oriented) universities on completion of a postgraduate research-oriented course of one to two years in duration. Professional master’s degrees are awarded by different types of higher education institutions that offer more professionally-oriented programmes. Professional master’s degrees are usually of shorter duration than a research-oriented master’s degree programme.

The duration of the programmes varies between 9 and 24 months. The list of selected master’s degree programmes can be found on this website. Please note that this is a provisional list and that information is subject to change. Please regularly check the website for up-to-date information.

The fellowship can cover the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel, insurance and thesis research, as specified in the NFP booklet ‘Rules and regulations for fellowship holders’. Different conditions may apply to e-learning courses or e-learning programmes.

The Colombo Plan – Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore Postgraduate Scholarships 2011/2012

Jointly Sponsored by: the Colombo Plan Secretariat and Technical Cooperation Directorate of Singapore

The Colombo Plan for Cooperative Economic and Social Development in Asia and the Pacific is a unique inter-governmental organization providing development assistance under the “Planning for Prosperity” motto and the concept of self-help where member countries provide assistance to one another in socio-economic development.

The Colombo Plan was conceived at the Commonwealth Conference on Foreign Affairs held in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in January 1950 and was established on 1 July 1951 as a cooperative venture for economic and social advancement of the people of South and Southeast Asia. It has grown from the founding group of seven Commonwealth nations - Australia, Britain, Canada, Ceylon, India, New Zealand and Pakistan – to twenty five including non- Commonwealth and countries belonging to the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Current Colombo Plan member countries are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United States of America and Vietnam.

In December 1977 the Colombo Plan for Cooperative Economic Development in South and Southeast Asia was changed to The Colombo Plan for Co-operative Economic and Social Development in Asia and the Pacific, to reflect the expanded geographical composition of its enhanced membership and the scope of its activities. The primary focus of all Colombo Plan activities is human resources development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Over the years, the programme content of the Colombo Plan has been adjusted to respond to the needs of member countries in a fast changing economic environment. In the early years, the training programmes were more of a long-term nature whilst the current programmes are established to provide advance skills and experience sharing, aimed at arriving at the best practices in different fields of economic and social activities for effective policy making and governance.

Funding

A significant characteristic of the Colombo Plan is that the administrative costs of the Council and the Secretariat are borne equally by all member countries and all member countries have an equal status in Colombo Plan’s functions and activities. However, programme activities are funded by voluntary contributions by member countries as development partners. In addition, non-member countries, other international and regional organisations and other donor agencies are also sourced for funding.

Current Programmes

In 1995, Colombo Plan revitalized its programmes to emphasize on short-term training courses in priority areas and promoting South-South cooperation. The current programmes of the Colombo Plan are in the areas of Public Administration and Environment including post-graduate long-term scholarships, Private Sector Development and Drug Demand Prevention in member countries. In this regard, Colombo Plan has established three programmes for capacity building, namely, Drug Advisory Programme, Programme for Public Administration and Programme for Private Sector Development.

The Singapore Cooperation Programme

Singapore has provided technical assistance to other developing countries since 1960s. As a country whose only resource is its people, Singapore believes that human resource development is vital for economic and social training provided by other countries and international organizations. Through the Singapore Cooperation Programme(SCP), Singapore can contribute to the development of other developing countries.

In 1992, the SCP was established, bringing together under one framework the various technical assistance programmes offered by Singapore. Through the SCP, the range and number of training programmes have been increased to meet the needs of developing countries. Since 1982, Singapore has sponsored training courses and study visits for well over 20,000 officials from some 147 countries. The SCP is managed by the Technical Cooperation Directorate (TCD) of the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

How to Get Scholarship

Dear all,
Since many people asked me for some tips on how to get scholarship, I think I just write it down for everyone. Remember, this is what I think and what happened to me. This is does not mean that the content is absolute truth.

How to get scholarship, step by step

1. Lay an eye to particular scholarship.

I usually look at scholarship advertisment. If I found it interested, then I will apply. Although it is possible to find the department where you want to study first then apply the scholarship, I don`t do that because usually the nominal of scholarship is small. I am only interested to fully funding scholarship. Some scholarship, however, request you to apply officially to university and get accepted before apply the scholarship (mostly European scholarship I think)

2. Get the scholarship form and read it carefully

Make sure that you are elligible to the scholarship, you are within the age range, the topic you want is included, your background is acceptable etc. Some scholarship is mainly for gov. employee, some are for age 35 and below, you fulfil the minimum language requirements etc.
3. Find the university you want to go

Make sure that you know where you want to go. Only very few scholarship that just want you to write down what subject you want to do and you can choose the university later. Again, check the requirements carefully

4. Collecting the requirement

Be very careful with the requirement. If it requires international TOEFL/IELTS, then do it. If it is not specified, better ask than sorry. If it asked for 2 recommendations, get two, some even specifically asked for direct supervisor, make sure you get it as well. Some scholarship request you to develop contact with the department you want to study, then try to get it.

5. Make sure that your application is "selling"

Imagine yourself the person who need to select which application is acceptable, which is not. That person need to look hundreds and maybe thousands of application. Make sure that your application is neat, clear, concise, to the point and rich instead making it a flowery boring story that nobody want to finish reading it. Think, what is your strong point that makes you different from others, what is the founder agenda etc. Also make sure that when they say one page explanation, it`s one page. Try to put as much related information in the limited space

6. Pay attention to deadline

Things to consider:

1. Scholarship cost lots of money. Think that it is the founder investing the money on you. What can you give them in return. Therefore you must have a clear idea why you want to take the degree, why it is important for you to take that degree, what your future plan is, how the degree will support your plan, what is the benefit of your degree and knowledge for you, for your office, for your country and for the founder. Remember, no need to bluffing and saying things like "solving poverty problem in Indonesia" but be more specific and achievable such enhancing teaching language curriculum in University ABC, particularly in terms of develooping comprehensive student learning by doing approach. You must have the confidence that you need the degree, you can do it, and you can implement your knowledge in your work

2. Master and above degree is not a path to get a job. I was wrong and tought master is sellable to get a better job. To some extend yes, but it is actually wiser to think that master should be used to enhance your qualification at work. Therefore, make sure that your educational background, your work and your proposed study are matched, or at least try to matched them

3. Have confidence. Technically, passing the administration selection is the most difficult part. Possibility for a person to pass interview is much higher than passing the administration part. If you keep failing in the interview part, means that you are not really clear about your own proposed study (or you can`t express it well). During the interview, make sure that it is you that lead the interview, you should elaborate each question, and it is quite important to be original. Sometimes it looks nice if you quote from other sources (to make you look smarter). I like to quote Confucius saying during interview. During my interview for ASF, the major question was, "why do you want to this topic, and why you do it in South China? ." The answer: "Majority of research in this issue discuss the problems that occur in North China. If I do it in the north like other scholars, what will be my additional value? The project will use new approach in looking at the China`s one child policy beyond the common pattern where instead of comparing single and non single child, I compare male and female single child. That is my scholarly contribution for the discourse. Later one of the professor said that he is very impress with that answer, because they looking for original approach. So, make sure that you have the confidence, you have the educational background in that issue, and you seems know what you are going to do,

4. Get the requirements they want

Make sure that you can fulfil all the requirements. It is very useful if you have some additional things that you can offer. In my situation, I get involve with lots of social organisations dealing with HIV, drug abuse, community empowerment etc. Since I am doing social studies, these are very positive addition for my applications. Trainings, seminars, articles are important too.

Hope that the info are useful.
